Artist Statement
Never In my wildest dreams did I believe I would grow up to be an artist, but seven years ago, on a whim, I decided to try out a metalworking class to fill up the extra time I had as a new retiree. It was love from the beginning!
Now I have always been "crafty" and have tried and discarded more hobbies than you can name, but working with precious metal and stones is very rewarding. I hope my passion is visible in my work.
About 2 years ago, my local studio needed one more student in the pottery class, so I signed on just for the fun of it. Now I am completely hooked on that. I am fortunate to have access to an open studio where I can hone my skills and meet wonderful people with similar interests.
Besides metalwork and pottery, which keep me in the studio for several hours nearly every day, I love to travel when time and budget allow. I have been fortunate to spend time in Europe, Britain, Mexico and Canada plus many of the states in my own country.
For eight years I have been volunteering at Partners for World Health in Portland. I do this a couple of mornings each week. There, we collect unused, unneeded, and slightly outdated medical supplies and equipment from all over New England and New York. These are redistributed to developing countries in Asia and Africa. Two years ago I went on a medical mission to Uganda (a bow to my former nursing career).
And, of course, there is spending time with family and friends, my biggest pleasure.
I was born in California, where my father was stationed in the Army. Then I spent my formative years in Connecticut, where my siblings and extended family still live. I graduated from the University of Connecticut with a B.S.in Nursing.
I've now lived in Maine for almost 50 years, and I plan on staying put!
